Maria Trofimova

Maria’s childhood and teenage years have been dedicated to professional sports – Modern Pentathlon. After finishing the athlete’s career, she decided to connect future activities with sports and joined the Modern Pentathlon Federation of Russia as an Assistant to the Secretary General. The dream of all athletes is to participate in even become a gold medallist at the Olympic Games. Maria did not manage to do this in sports practice but found an option in sports administration and worked for more than 6 years at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games Organising Committee as Head of Olympic and Paralympic Family Services. She had the chance to participate as an observer and secondee in such grand events as Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Games. Due to the fact that key tasks were closely related to the hospitality and hotel operations, Maria decided to get an appropriate degree in hotel management and completed her Master’s course at HTMi Switzerland. While doing research and choosing a Master’s dissertation topic, she realised that intercultural communication is vital for hospitality companies and directly relates to the organisation of major events. Maria keeps on working in this area. Her main job is Protocol Manager at 2018 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee. Together with her friend, Ekaterina Kuzina, they are going to launch an educational project to combine their areas of interest – hospitality and events organisation as well as research and coaching on intercultural communication.
